Getting rid of Johnson isn't without its merits: they wash their hands of compromise, they get a louder person to do fruitless things that waste time but get tv, it motivates the base...
That said Democrats might not want to rescue Johnson: illustrates Republicans disfunction, highlights Republican extremism and gives voters a clear idea of the bargain.
Democrats could save him in exchange for votes but I doubt he has the ability to survive the privileged motions if he took those deals

Why is it, every time the right feels slighted, they try and create their own version of something, but it always ends up as the butt of a joke and awful (and probably a security risk)?
