Ownership Verified: BCS repeatedly breaks, fixes, and re-breaks his Jeep

Is that an '06 H1?

You do know that the first land rover was built from a surplus Willys from the war right?

Not so much "built from" as "improved upon". :p

Awesome trail report. I'd still like to get some of the pictures from a few of my trips I did in the summer up here, but alas, I have still yet to receive them from the photographer.... >_>

Also, I need someone who I can wheel with. Going by myself can get... sketchy.

Yeah, solo wheeling is too risky for me... not to mention that wheeling with other people is half the fun.

Is that an '06 H1?

I don't think so, I know it's not an Alpha. I remember him saying he'd bought it new, but it was just before the front & rear E-Lockers became an option on the H1 as he had to get a kit from the factory to add them. So I think it's an 01 or 02.

Edit: checked his forum profile, it's an 01.

So I've come to inevitable conclusion that I need a house with a garage, this condo stuff is for the birds and I hate driving to a different city to steal my folks' garage. So the more expensive modifications are on hold while I hunt for a bigger place. Found a place with a detached, heated, 220V-wired garage... too bad the house was in a terrible state and would have needed $100,000+ worth of renos to fix.

However, she hit a milestone yesterday:

So I bought her a present.

I guess this means I need to figure out a mount system, be it a simple plate or a full bumper. I'm also replacing the steel cable with synthetic line before I mount it, the steel stuff is a right pain to work with.

Wow! That's just shy of a quarter million miles!

But he cheated by rebuilding his engine. :p

Hey, in defense of the ol' 318, when I tore it down it still had the factory crosshatch on the cylinder walls and no taper in the bores. With regular maintenance it would have easily done another 200,000km or more had it not experienced some, er, foreign object debris.

Edit: Also, I seem to have exceeded the number of edits I can do to the thread title. I was hoping to have a running update of the Broken/Not-Broken status there but alas it is stuck.

Wow, I haven't posted since February, damn.

So, uh, I still haven't mounted the winch, because I haven't gotten a winch bumper yet. Can't make my own as I lack a welder, a 220V connection, and also a garage. They also tend to be expensive, and I need a bigger house more than I need a bumper. Keeping an eye on the classifieds, though. There's one for sale for $300 right now but it's very much a home-built ghetto affair.

Anyway.

Things have been pretty uneventful lately, mostly just maintenance stuff you'd expect on a high-miles vehicle. New fuel pump and front brake calipers are what I've done since February, as well as the original exhaust system gave up (as in, started to fall in half) so now it has a new muffler and 2.5" pipe from the Y back that dumps out the side.

When I built the motor I thought the timing cover gasket looked a bit iffy... which turned out to be the case as it started leaking a lot of coolant and I had to replace it, which was annoyingly rather time-consuming. I got it put back together just in time to hit the trails:

Not many pics from that trip, I'm usually the guy who takes them and I can't very well take pics of myself.

Shortly thereafter, I made the unenviable mistake of lending the Jeep to my girlfriend so she could go visit her folks while I was installing an Aux adapter in her Fusion. She got it all the way back home and then backed it into a contractor's trailer while parking, right on the driver's side corner. Tore up the bumper cover, shattered the taillight, and bent up the hatch. I grabbed a taillight fromthe JY but haven't found a bumper the right colour yet or a hatch that isn't rusted. So it's driveable and legal, if a bit ugly. She lucked out as well, we told the owner of the trailer what had happened and he was amazed that we owned up to it. Settled for 3 flats of Budweiser, even though there was probably a good three grand worth of damage to the trailer.

Took it out to McLean Creek again after that incident. As usual, not many pics of my rig. I had my GF run the camera when I did the muck-hole so I would at least get a couple pics of me.

I was the third guy through the muck/log pit, and a few guys got stuck so I shut the Jeep off and helped/took pics for a while - bad move. Went to head out again, Jeep wouldn't start. Tried lots of stuff, boosting it, whacking the starter, etc. Nothing. The starter was stone-cold dead. I got towed back to the trailhead by the big red Land Cruiser. So I came home like this. Thank goodness for AMA!

I took the starter to a friend that owns a starter/alternator shop and had him take a look. He was amazed it'd gone 400k+ on the original starter! Turns out the thing had just run out of brushes, and had picked a rather inopportune time to do so! This is what the armature looked like:

Too far gone for a rebuild, I bought a replacement starter. (OEM Mitsu unit, considering how long the old one lasted!)

Fired right up with the new starter, and things have been doing well ever since. I'm considering pulling my spare transmission out of storage and having its internals upgraded, but that's low on the priority list.

Scrolled through pictures, saw New South Wales number plates on that Toyota, kept scrolling, 'wait, this is in Canada...' Interesting...

Obviously AUDM is the next big thing :p

That's one awesome truck you have there

Why is the front bumper off after towing it? Did they break it off?

Thanks! I removed the front bumper a long time ago as it rubs on the big tires and I didn't want to tear it off on the trail. I never bothered to put it back on.

or these

i've seen a few Patrols with specialised offroad bumpers, they look pretty neat, and the dune bashing means it works

Yeah, it'll have to be a specialized front bumper for the winch mount. I'd like to get a KOR or a Hanson Offroad but they're $$$ and hugely expensive to ship.

Hanson:

Hell with it, Merry Christmas to the Heap. I found a really good deal on the Hanson bumper from a local shop, so I'll be ordering it in the morning. Finally get that stupid winch mounted.

Nice, that's a good lookin' bumper. I'm in the opposite boat, I need to get a winch for my winch bumper.

That's funny, by the end of the day today I may end up owning more winches than bumpers. A guy's got a (rough-looking) Warn 8274 he's asking $150 for, looks terrible and needs new cable but apparently still functions. I'm considering buying that, selling my new-in-box Superwinch for what I paid for it and using that money to rebuild the Warn.

imagejpeg_2_zpsefe54a3f.jpg

As I said, she's ugly, but 8274s are nigh unkillable. New seals and stuff, polish the drum, throw on some synthetic line and call it good.
