Wow, I haven't posted since February, damn.
So, uh, I still haven't mounted the winch, because I haven't gotten a winch bumper yet. Can't make my own as I lack a welder, a 220V connection, and also a garage. They also tend to be expensive, and I need a bigger house more than I need a bumper. Keeping an eye on the classifieds, though. There's one for sale for $300 right now but it's very much a home-built ghetto affair.
Anyway.
Things have been pretty uneventful lately, mostly just maintenance stuff you'd expect on a high-miles vehicle. New fuel pump and front brake calipers are what I've done since February, as well as the original exhaust system gave up (as in, started to fall in half) so now it has a new muffler and 2.5" pipe from the Y back that dumps out the side.
When I built the motor I thought the timing cover gasket looked a bit iffy... which turned out to be the case as it started leaking a lot of coolant and I had to replace it, which was annoyingly rather time-consuming. I got it put back together just in time to hit the trails:
Not many pics from that trip, I'm usually the guy who takes them and I can't very well take pics of myself.
Shortly thereafter, I made the unenviable mistake of lending the Jeep to my girlfriend so she could go visit her folks while I was installing an Aux adapter in her Fusion. She got it all the way back home and then backed it into a contractor's trailer while parking, right on the driver's side corner. Tore up the bumper cover, shattered the taillight, and bent up the hatch. I grabbed a taillight fromthe JY but haven't found a bumper the right colour yet or a hatch that isn't rusted. So it's driveable and legal, if a bit ugly. She lucked out as well, we told the owner of the trailer what had happened and he was amazed that we owned up to it. Settled for 3 flats of Budweiser, even though there was probably a good three grand worth of damage to the trailer.
Took it out to McLean Creek again after that incident. As usual, not many pics of my rig. I had my GF run the camera when I did the muck-hole so I would at least get a couple pics of me.

I was the third guy through the muck/log pit, and a few guys got stuck so I shut the Jeep off and helped/took pics for a while - bad move. Went to head out again, Jeep wouldn't start. Tried lots of stuff, boosting it, whacking the starter, etc. Nothing. The starter was stone-cold dead. I got towed back to the trailhead by the big red Land Cruiser. So I came home like this. Thank goodness for AMA!
I took the starter to a friend that owns a starter/alternator shop and had him take a look. He was amazed it'd gone 400k+ on the original starter! Turns out the thing had just run out of brushes, and had picked a rather inopportune time to do so! This is what the armature looked like:
Too far gone for a rebuild, I bought a replacement starter. (OEM Mitsu unit, considering how long the old one lasted!)
Fired right up with the new starter, and things have been doing well ever since. I'm considering pulling my spare transmission out of storage and having its internals upgraded, but that's low on the priority list.
