XP truely broken

Wipe and reinstall will happen.

Regarding her virus scanner, "every time I turn the PC on it tells me to update it."

Sit rep...

Finally got the PC at my house. Because I only have DVD-R's and her PC won't burn them (even though it says it does and I dunno if you can even burn in safe mode) and as I don't have a spare HDD hanging around, i'm gonna have to put her stuff onto my PC 4 gig at a time (Memory stick... and yes I know this has disaster written all over it.)

Well, good luck with that.

Really, watch what you put on the backups. Make sure before you reload anything from them that it is scanned thoroughly, really thoroughly with an upto date anti virus package.

Good luck.

All her stuff is pics/music/videos and the odd word document.

I only have AVG free, hopefully it catches it all.

I'm sorry, but no, i doesn't. After i upgraded from AVG Free (henceforth referred to as AVG useless) to NOD32, it found 5 trojans lurking in various keygens i had scattered on my PC's harddrive from lots of extremely legal software i had bought on the internet *ahem*. Try the online scanners from one of the major players, they're pretty good and 100% free. They just won't do on-access scans so they're useless to protect your pc on a daily basis.

Scanners:
Trend Micro: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Kaspersky: http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
Symantec: http://security.symantec.com/
McAfee: http://www.mcafee.com/freescan

I luckily have not had the problem but I would use ALL the scanners mentioned above, if the machine was so bad as need a rebuild and wipe.

Disaster, i have all the files and i wiped the HDD.
However.... the PC came with a recover CD and it says 'This system is not compatible with this reload process'.

Does that mean more fun and games with memory sticks then?

I installed Ubuntu on an old desktop last week. Looks and runs nicely but I can't install my wireless adaptor yet, and I'm not really sure what I'm going to use it for. :(

Tried my 'bought' version of XP 'setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer '... apparently because it's a sata drive.

I wish it was legal to shoot family members in the face.
My sister yesterday... "You know I have warranty?... Yeah i pay ?7000 a day extended cover"

AM is still not amused.

And i thought setting up networks was hard.. This thread looks like Chinese to me.

You can "find" copies of XP with sata already slipsteamed, and Nod32 with unlimted updates can also be "found", both should be installed. Either that or get Vista (already has sata) and don't turn off UAC, she will get that annoying "are you sure you wish to do this?" but at least she won't install another virus. Next time the virus might not be so nice. It's fairly common to get a delete all .mp3 .jpeg .doc and end up with no files.

Also if shes going to keep installing movies from mininova without knowing what she's doing you should tell her to get a flash drive and every week backup her data to it. That was next time she does this (and it will happen again) it's just s simple wipe and restart.

Because i'm pissed off with her, i'm making her go through the crappy extended warranty

Yes that makes me a c***, but it serves her right.

Ever think about enrolling her in a computer course? :|

Just asking....

I 'bought' her one of those huge 100+ PC books for Dummies... but she won't read them because they're on her PC and not in paper form. (she refuses to print out a billion pages)

That's not always true. NOD32 has a serious problem with Vundo-based trojans - it simply can't see them. Spyware Doctor I think is the best program to catch trojan-based viruses.

On topic - I didn't think these viruses (that infect the whole computer) were still alive. 5-6 years ago, I had a virus that infected ALL .exe and .dll files on the computer and prevented all anti-virus programs from running (I guess it made a blacklist of filenames). Solution - Format C:
